28th January 2010: It's official - HMRC confirms Amnesty Extends to Dentists
HMRC have now confirmed that the tax amnesty announced for doctors earlier this month will be extended to dentists.
In their announcement confirming this HMRC stated “dentists were always one of the professional groups we planned to include early in the campaign. We have already done much background work and this will mean that we will be able to provide the necessary support as well as being able to pursue any follow-up activity needed.”
This amnesty enables dentists with undisclosed tax liabilities to come forward and put their affairs in order. If they do this, HMRC have guaranteed that a penalty of no more than 10% will be sought. They have made it clear that those dentists not notifying their intention to make a disclosure by the cut off date of 31 March will face enhanced penalties. These can be up to 100% of the additional tax payable and in extreme cases criminal prosecution will be considered.
Booth Ainsworth Partner, Peter Howard, who is a leading dental accountant expert, said of the announcement; “It has been known for some time that HMRC have been ‘stalking’ dentists - building up a detailed picture of how the industry works. It was only a matter of time before they started a focused [attack].
